Frequently Asked Questions
- 01This group might be exactly what you've been looking for if:You want to be in a room (even a virtual one) with other Trans, Nonbinary, or Gender Diverse adults who actually get it, no explaining required. You're craving an affirming space to explore identity, relationships, emotions, and where you're headed, without having to translate your experience for anyone. You value real conversations over small talk, and you're okay sitting with emotional honesty, even when it's uncomfortable. You're open to both sharing your story and learning from someone else's.You can show up consistently. This isn't a drop-in space, it's a small group that grows because everyone commits to being there. You're ready to build real relationships with people who see you fully, no performing, no over explaining. Not sure if it's the right fit? That's completely normal, and totally okay. We offer a brief screening consultation where we can talk it through together and figure out if this is the right space for you right now.
- 02To join IdentiT, you'll need to be a Trans, Nonbinary, or Gender Diverse adult between 18 and 40. Beyond that, the only other step is a brief screening consultation with us, just so we can get to know you a little and make sure this group feels right for you before you commit. And, that's really it. No long application process, no extra hurdles just making sure this is the right place for you.
- 03No. Participation matters, but it looks different for everyone, and there's no pressure to perform.Feeling nervous before your first session is completely normal, almost everyone starts feeling that way. You won't be pushed to share more than feels right for you, ever. What usually happens is trust builds session by session, and without even realizing it, you start opening up more and connecting with the group in ways that feel natural, not forced. The one thing we do ask is that you stay present, camera on, in a private space where you can speak freely if and when you're ready.
- 04Yes. Absolutely. We know how vulnerable it feels to open up, especially in a group setting, so making this space feel safe isn't just a policy for us, it's the whole point.Everything you share stays in the room. We use a secure, HIPAA-compliant platform for every session, and your information is never shared outside your care without your written permission (the only exceptions are the rare situations required by law, which we will explain before starting the group.)A few things we ask of every participant to help protect that safety for the whole group: keep your camera on, join from a private space where no one can overhear you, and use headphones if you can. These aren't just rules, they're how we all protect each other. At the end of the day, we want this to be a space where you can actually show up as you are and know you'll be met with respect, not judgment.
- 05No.You don't need to be currently working with an individual therapist, whether at IVCC or anywhere else, to join this group. Some people come to this group on its own, others pair it with individual therapy. Either way works. During the screening, we'll talk through what's going on for you and figure out together whether this group makes sense for where you're at right now.
- 06Kind of, but not quite. Let me explain the difference, because it actually matters. This is a therapist-led psychotherapy process group, not a peer-led support group. That distinction shapes everything about how the group works.Yes, people naturally end up supporting each other here, that happens organically. But the group is guided by a mental health professional and board-certified advanced gender therapist, with the intention of going deeper than just talking through what's hard. It's built to help you understand yourself more clearly, build emotional awareness, communicate better, and create relationships that actually feel fulfilling. So instead of just processing challenges out loud, you leave with real insight and real change, not just a space to vent. Although there is going to be some venting involved. 😊
- 07Once you fill out the interest form below, we'll review it and reach out to schedule a brief screening consultation. That conversation is just for us to get to know each other a little, answer any questions you have, and talk through what you're looking for so we can figure out together if IdentiT is the right fit right now.If it feels like a good match, we'll walk you through enrollment, get you the paperwork you need, and save your spot in the next cohort. OMG, we cannot wait to get to know you! 🧡
- 08Each session is $50, charged automatically to the card you have on file right after the session ends. This group is intentionally self-pay, and that's not by accident or limitation. Insurance means a diagnosis on permanent record and your personal information moving through systems outside our control, and we don't think you should have to trade your privacy for access to support. We made this choice with you in mind, so self-pay keeps this experience entirely between you and us, nobody else. We'll always make sure you know exactly what to expect cost-wise before you start, no surprises along the way.
- 09Life happens, and we get that. Missing an occasional session won't get you removed from the group. That said, this group works best when there's consistency, both for you and for the trust the group builds together. To protect that, missing more than 2 sessions means we'll need to remove you from the cohort, this isn't about punishment, it's about making sure the group stays a safe, connected space for everyone in it. If you know your schedule might make consistent attendance hard, let's talk about it during your screening consultation so we can figure out the right timing for you to join.
- 10Right now, yes, IdentiT runs in English. But we know how important it is to have this space in Spanish too, so a Spanish-language group is coming soon. Stay tuned, we'll share details as soon as it's ready. Próximamente, este mismo grupo estará disponible completamente en español. Mantente al tanto. 😉
- 11IdentiT is facilitated by Charlie (Carlos Garcia), a Mental Health Counselor, Canadian Certified Counsellor, Board-Certified Advanced Gender Therapist, and Ph.D. candidate in Clinical Sexology.Charlie works with individuals and couples across Florida and Canada, with a focus that includes LGBTQ+ and transgender concerns, identity exploration, relationships, and life transitions. He brings a warm, collaborative approach rooted in genuinely understanding his clients, not just treating them. This isn't someone learning about your experience for the first time. It's someone who has spent his career creating spaces where people don't have to explain who they are.
- 12That's a real concern, and a fair one. Process groups can bring things up, and it's normal to want support beyond the every-two-weeks rhythm. If that happens, we offer individual therapy with affirming therapists at IVCC, including Charlie himself or another clinician on the team. Many participants choose to pair the group with individual sessions, especially during moments that feel like a lot. You're never left to sit with something alone until the next group meets.
- 13New IdentiT cohorts begin every 4 months, so if a group is already underway, you won't be joining mid-session. Instead, we'll get you set up for the next cohort and make sure you're ready to go from day one.
- 14This group might be exactly what you've been looking for if:You're in a relationship with someone who is Trans, Nonbinary, or Gender Diverse, and you want to be in a room (even a virtual one) with others who actually understand what that's like. You're craving a space to process the emotional, relational, and sometimes confusing parts of this journey, without having to explain the basics first. You value real conversations over small talk, and you're okay sitting with emotional honesty, even when it's uncomfortable. You're open to both sharing your experience and learning from someone else's.You can show up consistently. This isn't a drop-in space, it's a small group that grows because everyone commits to being there. You're ready to build real relationships with people who get this specific kind of complicated, without judgment. Not sure if it's the right fit? That's completely normal, and totally okay. We offer a brief screening consultation where we can talk it through together and figure out if this is the right space for you right now.
